Language Features of Report text

 REPORT TEXT

Language Features

Hello everyone,in this session we will discuss in more detail about the language features of a text in the report text. As previously explained, a text report has 6 language features, namely:

Sample of report text:

THE SUNFLOWER

The sunflowers are annual plant in the family Asteraceae. They have large flower heads (capitulum). The stem can grow up to 3 meters tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. Other types of sunflowers include the California Royal Sunflower, which has a burgundy (red + purple) flower head.

The flower head is actually made of hundreds or thousands of tiny flowers called florets. The central florets look like the center of a normal flower, and the outer florets look like yellow petals. All together they make up a "false flower" or pseudanthium. The benefit to the plant is that it is very easily seen by the insects and birds which pollinate it, and it produces thousands of seeds.

The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. That is why Kansas is sometimes called the Sunflower State. To grow well, sunflowers need full sun. They grow best in fertile, wet, well-drained soil with a lot of mulch. In commercial planting, seeds are planted 45 cm (1.5 ft) apart and 2.5 cm (1 in) deep.

The report text has 6 language features consisting of general nouns, Relating verbs, action verbs, Present tense, Technical terms and the last is Paragraph with topic sentences.

1. General noun

Nouns are features of language that talk about people, places, ideas and things. Usually this noun begins with the word an. a and also the. In the text above, for example, "The Sunflower" the phrase is one of the general noun forms.Instead of using the word "my lovely sunflower", in the report text you will see the word "The Sunflower", That's because in this text report uses general nouns without pronouns.

For the other example :

·       The stem can grow up to 3 meters tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide.

·       The central florets look like the center of a normal flower

 2. Relating Verb and Action Verb

Relating verb is help us to identify or describe some characteristic of person or things meanwhile Action verb are verbs that indicate an action or behavior.

·       In the relating verb, it can describe the character of the object as in the text above that "The sunflowers are annual plant in the Asteraceae family"This illustration states that sunflower is a member of compound interest.

·       In the Action verb, describes an action or behavior such as in the text above "The stem can grow up to 3 meters tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide".

3. Simple Present Tense

The language rule used is the Simple Present Tense because it describes habits or facts. Based on the text above, the simple present tense can be found in almost all parts of the story including:

·       The sunflowers are annual plant in the family Asteraceae.

·       The stem can grow up to 3 meters tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide.

·       The flower head is actually made of hundreds or thousands of tiny flowers called florets.

·       The central florets look like the center of a normal flower, and the outer florets look like yellow petals.

·       The benefit to the plant is that it is very easily seen by the insects and birds which pollinate it, and it produces thousands of seeds. And etc.

It can be seen in some of the examples above using the present tense seen from its structure, namely:

Subject + verb 1 (+ s/es) + object

Note: Actually, the simple past tense can also sometimes be used in the report tense, but in something that can be said to be extinct, such as "The fossil was found five centuries ago "

4. Technical term

This section describes something or a more specific word. For example, the text above describes a flower having a family called Asteraceae, where this flower is meant to be a compound type of flower which has stacked flower petals. The technical term includes a term that is in the text, for example, as taken in this session, which is about "Sunflower" or flowers, the terms in the flower must be present.

For the example:

·       All together they make up a "false flower" or pseudanthium.

·       The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. And etc.

5. Paragraph with topic sentence

Paragraphs are a series of sentences arranged with coherence and all related to a single topic. Almost every paragraph will contain a topic that is intended in the text, this topic sentence summarizes the main idea in a paragraph itself.

As you can see in the example text above the use of the word "sunflower" can be found repeatedly in every paragraph. In the second sentence in the first paragraph the phrase "Large flower head" is called the complex sentence. The previous sentence describes sunflower, so the next sentence will refer to the initial sentence, which is about the sunflower.

For the other example that can be studied more about report text is as follows:

LION

Lion is one of the big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae.  It is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in India. In ancient historic times, their range was in most of Africa, including North Africa, and across Eurasia from Greece and southeastern Europe to India. But now, the lion is classified as a vulnerable species by the IUCN, having seen a major population decline (30–50% per two decades during the second half of the twentieth century.)

In the wild, males rarely live longer than 10 to 14 years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly dampen their longevity. In captivity they are able to live more than 20 years. Even though they may take to bush and forest, they typically inhabit savanna and grassland. Groups of female lions typically hunt together. Although they are also expert scavengers obtaining over 50 percent of their food by scavenging as opportunity allows, lions are apex and keystone predators. While lions do not typically hunt humans, some have. Sleeping especially during the day, lions are active primarily at night (nocturnal), although sometimes at twilight (crepuscular).
